About the Author

Sara Jane Thornton is a writer and inspirational speaker who lives in New Brunswick, Canada. An advocate for the rights of mental health patients and sexual abuse survivors, she focuses much of her work on revealing the underlying realities of eating disorders.

At age sixteen, following years of childhood sexual abuse, Sara dropped out of school, left home, and developed alcohol, drug, and sex addictions, eventually sliding into a downward spiral of self-starvation that nearly took her life.

Hospitalized at twenty-one for a medley of psychiatric ailments including anorexia, bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and borderline personality disorder, she was given a dismal prognosis. Aided by her innate resilience and determination, however, she defied expectations and, discharged at age twenty-three, began learning to live on her own.

She subsequently graduated with honors from the New Brunswick Community College, after which she worked as a crisis counselor for at-risk youth. At age twenty-six, she gave birth to a daughter named Fallon. Sara currently plans to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology at the University of New Brunswick, where she has previously served as a guest speaker. Her triumphant struggle with anorexia has been featured in newspaper articles, and she is one of three women appearing in the film Through True Eyes: Process of Recovery from Eating Disorders, produced by Atlantic Mediaworks.
